This album mythologizes The Goliath, an early British Battleship that was set to travel to the United States in the winter of 1781.
The listener starts Portside with Goliath along the edge of the Bristol Channel, where the crew readies the ship amidst a heavy, dense fog.
Then, the power and the force of the Goliath will be felt as it cuts across the Atlantic Ocean at top speed.
But as it moves closer to the American coast, a subtle crack forms, altering the course of fate for this proud boat and it's crew. "The Frozen Hull" details the mysterious freezing of the Goliath's hull- a phenomena that should not be possible on such a grand scale.
At first, the freezing goes unnoticed by the crew, but first a lag and then flooding begins to occur, where the crew scrambles to patch up the cracks but to no avail.
The evening comes, and with it, a storm of unimaginable proportions. "The Sinking Night" details the last hours of the ship, slowly collapsing and sinking in the darkness. It is unknown how many crew members started the journey, but only a scant few sailors make it off.
As the survivors are left to assume that they will freeze and starve, the sun starts to rise. To their surprise, the lifeboat approaches the coast of New England, and the "The Waking Lands" summons the survivors to explore misty, unfamiliar American shores...

I don't know about others, but I personally feel melancholic rather than depressed. The atmosphere is so thick that you can cut it with a knife, and after listening to this album (twice in a row), I can safely say that it will not end with two listens Kurt Von Jazzenhoff
